Pecha Kucha Night 11

I was asked to make the poster for Pecha Kucha Night by friend Logan Alexander. Pecha Kucha Night is a gathering where creatives get together and share ideas. I was told I could do whatever I want which is the best, but hardest assignment to be given. To narrow down the possibilities I started thinking about  the kind of people the event brings. I think it attracts like-minded individuals who are looking to learn, grow and be inspired. Cats attracted to a giant bottle of milk seemed to go along with that thought!

Below is a little process. Once I knew what I was going to do I had to figure out how I was going to do it. Lots of scribbling before finding something I liked.
I was trying to figure out how I was going to draw the type and where I was going to put it while sketching.

I had to resist my urge to make everything warm and orange which is the case with a lot of my illustrations.  The values were so similar and the big orange cat worked better on a complimentary background.
Just need to add type.
Final

 Cleo makes a cameo.

I made an alternate version and replaced the logo on the bottle to send out as a postcard.

Washington Magazine

These were for Washington University's alumni magazine. The story was about distilling science and making it easier for people to understand. You can read about it here.

Pajamas and food spots

For Swerve Calgary. People who wear pajamas in public.

After my Foodie Alphabet made the rounds on the internet, I got asked to draw lots of food. Here are a few selected spots for Diner Journal that I did a while ago. They accompanied recipes and an article on how to cook with things with tentacles, delicate vegetables and eggs.

Sauce magazine spots. How to score bread.

Fort Worth Weekly and NYT

A cover for Fort Worth Weekly. The story was about a very strict Home Owners Association. In return for maintaining the neighborhood, residents have to comply with strict rules and regulations set up by the HOA. One family failed to comply with a rule and as a result, the HOA began locking out their visitors. AD Bonnie Mays.

I drew some very happy cops for an op-ed I did for the New York Times Sunday Review. The article was about how the police department could be made far more efficient if they used more advance technology, but they have been slow to modernize. Read more about it here.

It got a call out on the Sunday Review page online. Cool! Thanks to AD Erich Nagler for the assignment.

Famous Fictional Worlds

I made these for Dan Zettwoch's annual Famous Fictional Show at the Mad Art gallery in St. Louis. Over 30 artists made pieces based in the realms of popular culture: movies, novels, television, comics, mythology, children’s literature, poetry and beyond. Depicting people was not allowed. Just the places, things, animals etc. Being a Seinfeld fan I chose to create different versions of Kramer's apartment. In the series we rarely see his place except when he ventures into one of his radical experiments in interior design.

"The Merv Griffin Set"-Kramer finds the Merv Griffin set in a dumpster near his apartment. He decides to reconstruct it in his home and proceeds to host a fake talk show there.

"Anytown USA"-Frank Costanza gives Kramer his broken screen door which inspires him to decorate the front of his apartment and give it an all American look.
"Kenny's Red Light"- A Kenny Rogers Roasters opens up across the street from Kramer. The red neon light disrupts his sleep causing him and Jerry to switch apartments...and personalities.
